Company History
It was back in January of 1963 when Donald Cope, at that time a cashier at the District Bank in Cheadle, had a desire to risk a safe and secure career and create his own business venture and Donald Cope Estate Agents was born.
The practise was located above what was then Godwin’s Bakery, on Cheadle High Street. After five successful years, expansion from this location was required and the business moved to new premises adjacent to Barclays Bank originally a ground floor office which after a short time was expanded to include the first floor space.
The business continued to thrive and generate a name for itself within the local property and insurance scene. In 1973 Andrew Stevenson was invited to join Donald Cope Estate Agents and was given a partnership a few years later. As the new partnership was formed and the range of products expanded the company name changed to what everyone associates it as today.
Donald Cope & Company was now a one stop shop providing all your property and insurance needs for Cheadle and the surrounding areas.
Business continued to thrive and by 1981 Donald’s son Philip joined the business and became a partner in 1986. By 1988 the company had again outgrown its facilities and so moved to its current location on the main Cheadle car park.
In 1990 the Company founder Donald Cope opted to take on a more consultancy role in order to concentrate on his passion of farming. This shift in the company infrastructure allowed Philip to direct the estate agency arm of the business while Andrew concentrated on the insurance side.
In 2024 Partner Andrew Stevenson, after 51 years of continued service to the Insurance Department signalled his intention to retire from this role. We were approached by Howdens of Lichfield who offered to take over this section of the business together with our established clients and the transfer was completed in July 2024 We are confident that Howdens will continue to look after our clients on the same fair and personal basis as we did.
The Estate Agency Department is unaffected by this transfer and will continue as before under the management of the Partners and continue to offer its own brand of Traditional Service.
